Spanish Healthcare, How Getting Medical Help In Spain Differs From Other Countries

Spain is known for the fact that their pharmacies offer most medications that can only be obtained via prescription in other countries as over the counter medications. As with any pharmacy, you can obtain most prescriptions from a doctor as long as the prescription is authentic. There are many pharmacies that are open twenty-four hours should the need arise to fill medications late at night. One cannot predict when an illness or injury can happen so that makes these twenty-four hour pharmacies very popular.

The doctors in Spain go through a much different education process then most countries. They get most of their education through undergraduate programs. If you're in the public health care system then you'll be assigned a general doctor where as if you've private insurance you can choose from a list of physicians. If you're looking for the best hospitals then you'll want to look in the larger towns as they usually have the bigger hospitals with more to offer.

As with any hospital, upon admission you must provide either a social security card, proof of insurance or that you've the money to pay the bill. Be sure to weigh the options to see if you would benefit more with a private insurance or if you'll do fine on the public system. Some people have conditions that require more frequent trips to the doctor and in that case it would be good for you to go with a private insurance to avoid the waiting lists.
